Alex helped us sketch out the concepts from a mini lesson on the three branches of government and the system of checks and balances.
We applied our knowledge in a complex game from iCivics.org where they had to play the role of all three branches, picking issues, hosting town halls, gaining support, passing bills, vetoing or signing laws, deeming them constitutional or not, and holding press conferences. The awesome thing about iCivics games are how deeply educational they are at every step: the students really had to think critically and comprehensively about each issue from a variety of perspectives.
We took advantage of the lovely weather and free wifi of the donut shop near the library for an afternoon project work session and 1:1 meetings. During this time, we discussed options for additional personal projects, greater specialization within our group projects,
