Nomad Middle School is a place where students thrive as engaged, curious learners in the world. We believe so strongly in this model of education that we're excited to help others learn how to inspire their students as well. Our two-day workshop will help you envision a way to to bring your own personal passions and whole self to the classroom, tap into student interests, and help them build the capacity to be engaged with the world around them.

 
 

Is this workshop right for you?

Our workshops are for adventurous educators in any setting, bold school leaders, parents and caregivers, or anyone ready to reconsider the ways we conceptualize schooling. This workshop is for you if you:

  • Want to experience a distinct and inventive way of teaching and learning

  • Are curious about how to apply creativity and maker activities as access points for any academic subject or social emotional lesson

  • Are interested bringing your personal interests and whole self into the classroom to enrich your experiences as well as those of your students

  • Want to deeply explore the question: “What is the point of school?”

  • Are wondering about how to support and recognize students’ whole identities and their individual learning styles


You’re Invited!

What: A two-day workshop at Nomad Middle School. As part of the workshop you will experience:

  • Hands-on activities designed to be accessible across grade levels, tied to academic outcomes 

  • Excursions centered around learning out in the world and amidst local community members

  • Activities centered around creativity and making that serve as launching points for deep academic and community engagement

Using these experiences, we will facilitate independent and small group time for participants to workshop how they can adapt these ideas and bring them to life in their own educational settings.

Where: Nomad Middle School (2592 Folsom St., San Francisco, CA 94110) 

When: Friday, August 16th and Saturday, August 17th from 9:00am–4:30pm.

What’s included: We’ll provide breakfast, coffee, tea and snacks each day (lunch is not included). We’ll provide all materials needed for all the experiences. 

Cost

We’re offering this workshop on a sliding scale to allow it to be accessible to more educators, especially those who may not have access to organizational financial support. If you do have access to organizational support, we ask that you pay the full cost of the workshop. We are committed to offering our workshops at accessible price points while also valuing our time and expertise. We encourage you to assess where you fall on the financial scale today and we offer the Green Bottle Sliding Scale and writings from Embracing Equity as resources. Your facilitators

Christie and Lisa are long-time educators, makers, dreamers, and doers who have worked together over the last decade to forge a new path for education via their one-of-a-kind, adventurous school, Nomad Middle School. Inspired by everything from quilts, Miss Frizzle, space travel, power tools, pigeons and San Francisco public transit, they seek to foster opportunities for deep engagement and discovery for students and educators alike. Through these workshops, Christie and Lisa hope to share some of the Nomad magic and offer their expertise to help other educators build the lesson, student experience, classroom, school, or educational model of their dreams—just as they have.
